  1. Length and Effective Length Are Not The Same Thing

Sander Roosendaal, Czech masters rower and data guru, created a rowing analytics platform that incorporates data from many on-the-water and off-the-water devices, including the NK SpeedCoach and EmPower Oarlock. The free to use platform and Sander's insights into his own rowing data are available on the Rowsandall website.

As with everything else in rowing, layback is a balance. Too little and you miss out on valuable length; too much and you waste effort, create technical stroke problems, and put undue stress on your lower back. This leads to the obvious question: what is the perfect amount of layback?

Coxswain Tips: Six Ways to Clarify Your Calls

Coxswains have a tough job, especially when under pressure. To make it a bit easier, we have put together these six ways to clarify your calls in the boat.

Question: I know what I want to say in the boat, but sometimes my words come out all jumbled. It gets worse when I’m under pressure. How can I keep my calls coherent during critical moments?

Coxswain Tips: Are You Intimidated by Your Crew?

Everyone has to start somewhere, and novice coxswains are often partnered with more experienced crews to avoid a blind-leading-the-blind situation. Even when the coxswain has just as much experience as his or her crew—more even—rowing can exaggerate the strong personalities in the boat. You'd think from the way some rowers speak to their coxswain that the coxswain was the most clueless, least motivated person on earth. If you are this unmotivated coxswain, stop reading and quit now.

  5. Coxswain Tips: Steer Like a Boss

Coxswain Tips: Steer Like a Boss

Picture yourself pushing a shopping cart backwards. Naturally, you move the light end of the cart to one side or the other in order to push the heavy end of the cart around. The rudder in the boat works the way your hands would on the cart—it moves the stern to one side or the other to change the overall direction the boat is pointing in.

Now picture yourself pushing a shopping cart backwards... on an ice skating rink. The cart keeps sliding around after you’ve stopped pushing it. Instead of going straight from one end of the rink to the other, the cart makes giant S-shaped turns, much like the boat on the water.

  6. Coxswain Tips: Listen and Count at the Same Time

Coxswain Tips: Listen and Count at the Same Time

Question: When I’m counting out strokes for a drill, I often lose track of which stroke we’re on, especially if the coach is talking. I know that what the coach is saying is important, but I don’t want to mess up the drill. How can I listen and count at the same time?

There is a stroke counter at the top right of your CoxBox screen. If you’re starting the drill from a standstill, press and hold the stop/start button (the big one) to reset the clock and counter before you direct your rowers to begin rowing. Quickly glance at the counter during the drill to know when to make your calls.

  10. GPS vs. IMPELLER

NK has now released the SpeedCoach GPS Model 2 that uses a 3 axis accelerometer & a 5 Hz GPS (Garmin & others are only 1 Hz). This now addresses the issue of slow updates of boat speed. The problem of moving current still remains: you are measuring the speed relative to land. The NK SpeedCoach overcomes this by being able to be switch to Impeller mode, therefore having your true speed relative to the moving water.
